Recipe Story
origins & traditionsThis authentic Danish oatmeal porridge, known as havregrød, is a beloved breakfast staple throughout Denmark. Made with creamy rolled oats cooked slowly in milk and water, this warming dish represents the Danish philosophy of hygge - finding comfort in simple pleasures. The porridge is traditionally topped with a homemade berry compote featuring seasonal berries, which adds natural sweetness and a beautiful contrast to the creamy base. Enhanced with a touch of cinnamon and finished with honey, this nutritious breakfast provides sustained energy throughout the morning. Perfect for cold mornings or any time you crave a wholesome, satisfying meal that connects you to Danish culinary traditions.
Instructions
step by stepIn a medium saucepan, combine the oats, milk, and water. Add a pinch of salt and stir well.
Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
Reduce heat to low and continue cooking for 10-12 minutes, stirring frequently, until the porridge reaches your desired consistency.
While the porridge cooks, prepare the berry compote. In a small saucepan, combine the blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries.
Add 2 tablespoons of honey and 2 tablespoons of water to the berries. Heat over medium heat for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until berries break down and create a sauce.
Once the porridge is ready, remove from heat and stir in the cinnamon and butter until melted.
Divide the porridge among four bowls.
Top each bowl with a generous spoonful of the warm berry compote.
Drizzle with additional honey if desired and serve immediately while hot.
