Recipe Story
origins & traditionsFive Spice Pork Dumplings are a beloved Chinese snack that showcases the aromatic complexity of traditional Chinese five-spice powder combined with juicy ground pork and fresh vegetables. Each dumpling is carefully wrapped in a thin dough wrapper and steamed until the filling becomes tender and flavorful while the wrapper achieves a delicate, slightly chewy texture. The filling combines ground pork with finely chopped cabbage, garlic, and ginger, seasoned with soy sauce, sesame oil, and the distinctive warm notes of five-spice powder. These dumplings are versatile enough to serve as an appetizer, snack, or light meal, and they pair beautifully with a simple dipping sauce of soy sauce and vinegar. Making dumplings is often a communal activity in Chinese households, bringing family and friends together in the kitchen.
Instructions
step by stepIn a large mixing bowl, combine ground pork, finely chopped cabbage, minced garlic, grated ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil, cinnamon, black pepper, and salt. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated.
Prepare your work surface by lightly dusting with flour. Place dumpling wrappers on the surface and cover with a damp towel to prevent drying.
Place one wrapper in your palm and add 1 tablespoon of filling to the center.
Dip your finger in water and moisten the edges of the wrapper.
Fold the wrapper in half to create a half-moon shape, pressing the edges firmly to seal. Create pleats along the edge for a traditional look, or simply press edges together.
Repeat with remaining wrappers and filling.
Prepare your steamer by lining the basket with cabbage leaves or parchment paper to prevent sticking.
Arrange dumplings in the steamer basket, leaving space between each one.
Bring water to a boil in your steamer pot or wok.
Place the steamer basket over boiling water, cover, and steam for 12-15 minutes until the wrappers are translucent and the filling is cooked through.
Remove from heat and let rest for 2 minutes before serving.
Serve hot with dipping sauce made from soy sauce, vinegar, and a touch of sesame oil.
