In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, and salt.
Alternately add the dry ingredients and milk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
Pour half of the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
Cut the guava paste into small cubes and distribute half over the batter layer.
Pour the remaining batter over the guava layer and top with remaining guava cubes.
Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Cool in pan for 15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Dust with powdered sugar before serving if desired.
