Gut and Psychology Syndrome diet
The Gut and Psychology Syndrome (GAPS) diet is a therapeutic nutritional protocol designed to heal the gut lining and restore healthy gut flora. It is based on the premise that many psychological and neurological conditions such as autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, dyslexia, depression, and schizophrenia are linked to compromised gut health. The GAPS diet eliminates foods that are difficult to digest, harm gut flora, or damage the intestinal lining, such as refined carbohydrates, processed foods, and grains. It emphasizes nutrient-dense, whole foods including homemade meat stocks, fermented foods, non-starchy vegetables, and healthy fats. The diet is structured in stages, beginning with an introductory phase that gradually introduces easily digestible foods, followed by a full phase that expands dietary options. The ultimate goal of the GAPS diet is to rebalance the gut microbiome, reduce inflammation, improve nutrient absorption, and alleviate both digestive and psychological symptoms.
