Following Jain dietary restrictions
Following Jain dietary restrictions involves adhering to a strict vegetarian diet that excludes all animal products and root vegetables. This means avoiding meat, fish, eggs, and any foods that involve the killing or harming of animals. In addition, root vegetables such as onions, garlic, potatoes, and carrots are prohibited because uprooting the plant kills it and often disturbs numerous microorganisms in the soil. Jainism promotes non-violence (ahimsa) in all aspects of life, including food consumption, so fermented foods, alcohol, and honey are also typically avoided due to the presence or impact on small organisms. Food should be consumed during daylight hours to minimize harm to unseen life, and filtered water is preferred to avoid ingesting microscopic beings. Processed foods that contain hidden animal derivatives are also excluded to ensure purity and non-violence in eating habits.
